´Bernese´ refers to the area of the breed’s origin, the canton of Bern. In the Swiss mountains he was a very important help of the local shepherds and dairymen. He also served to haul various loads. It is said that he is able to pull up to ten times his weight, which may therefore be up to 450 kg! He was also used by people who did not have sufficient means to keep a horse.

In this day and age this dog has lost its original role; there is no need to harness him or otherwise use him for work, although you may often see him helping rescuers.

He is easygoing and ideal for families. His character may be best described by the word 'friendly'. He is peaceful when meeting strangers too, and only someone who is not familiar with this breed may be afraid of him. He may be reserved to some but will never be aggressive.

How to make a Bernese mountain dog happy?

You will give him the most luxurious life if you build an insulated hut in the garden, take him for walks and play with him. You will always give his mood a great boost if you take him to a waterfront. Just as a Labrador, Bernese loves to swim and bathe. The greatest misery is to keep him alone, closed in a pen. And to see such a beautiful animal being sad simply breaks your heart!

Paradise for adventurous natures

Although it lies about 80 km outside of Tbilisi, you will be driving to get there for 2 hours. And on the way you may have to change the wheel. Free rides, heli skiing and paragliding here attracts enthusiasts from all over Europe because of the beautiful environment and lower prices than in Europe.
