Zeng Fanzhi: the best-selling contemporary Chinese artist
He grew up in China during the cultural revolution, which was an experience that led him to take up art. He was influenced by the political and cultural environment in which he grew up, but in spite of this his work remains a deeply personal matter.

His deluxe works refer to his fears arising from a problematic history, isolation and the instability of the present-day world. His work is easily recognised, he paints in the expressionist style, his figures in his older works have large heads and exaggerated characteristics. Aesthetics and mysticism and abstract and specific work intertwine in his current paintings.
From internal feelings to deluxe Chinese (un)usual art
At the beginning of his career he reflected his own experience in life, he observed society and his internal feelings, his paintings that were almost apocalyptic. His series of paintings called Mask and Hospital attracted attention from the entire art world.
This was followed by the Landscape series, which is his most recent. In this series he discovered the unique language spoken by Chinese art and began introducing the magic of traditional Chinese culture into his paintings, which he sets into a contemporary perspective.
Zeng Fanzhi creates deluxe art worth millions of dollars
He graduated in the field of Oil Painting at the Hubei Institute of Fine Art and now lives and works in Peking. His works are exhibited in many art institutions around the world and he receives one acknowledgement after another from international critics.
In 2013 his deluxe painting titled The Last Supper was sold for the record sum of USD 23.3 million at an auction at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. This is the highest price for which contemporary Asian art has been auctioned.
