You are probably familiar with famous artist Frida Kahlo. But did you know which deluxe clothing she liked to wear or which cosmetics she used? The Victoria and Albert Museum in London (the V&A), which specialises in applied and decorative art, will allow you to experience one of the most famous women in history from another aspect – it will reveal her most intimate personal items.
This iconic artist gained fame as a painter who created works in the style of the original Mexican culture. She combined elements of surrealism, realism and symbolism. Frida can undoubtedly be called the queen of auto-portraiture. She created 143 deluxe works of art during her life, 55 of which are auto-portraits. Her husband was famous artist Diego Riviera and her lover was communist revolutionary Lev Davidovich Trotsky. But Frida herself also actively supported the communist movement.
This deluxe exhibition will allow you to view the private life of Frida Kahlo and will present artefacts that she wore or used. The exhibited items include for example the traditional clothing of native women from central Mexico and Central America – a cotton huipil with chain-stich embroidery, or a blue satin blouse with a floral pattern, which Frida was photographed wearing on an image dating from 1939, her cosmetics and also her prosthetic leg with a leather shoe, which she was forced to use following amputation of her leg.
The fact that the tickets for the day of the ceremonial opening are completely sold-out confirms that this deluxe exhibition is a brilliant idea. But there are still enough free dates until the end of the exhibition (4 November). You can find a complete summary on the museum’s website. Tickets cost 15 Pounds and you can purchase them on-line.
