AFI Vokovice

Before Vokovice became a part of Prague, it was an independent municipality. It was connected to Prague in 1992 with a population of 2000. The centre of the former municipality was the noble court and several farming estates.

Chocolate factory instead of farming fields

In the 1920s, a geological survey was performed in the area, iron ore mines were created and a brick factory was built. Because of the mining development, agriculture did not evolve in the area. For this reasons, the farmers sold their estates and new inhabitants moved in. Among other things, there was a chocolate and candy factory - the famous Kroupova Bonbonka.

New construction is dominated by the Shiran Tower high-rise

The new developments in Vokovice to the north of Evropská třída date back to the first half of the last century. They include the extensive compound formerly called Aritma, which is dominated by the Shiran Tower high-rise. It is 73 metres high and was built in 1971. It offers administrative space for lease and is the 23rd tallest building in the Czech Republic, which underwent major refurbishment in 2002.

Project of the future: AFI Vokovice

There are plans for the construction of a primarily administrative compound, called AFI Vokovice, on the corner of Evropská and Kladenská Streets. The project has been taken on by DAM architekti studio, which designed 2 buildings with 6 to 8 overground floors. The roofs will feature luxury greenery and landscaping.

Living in a luxury location

During the First Republic, an interesting villa district was built with the buildings arranged in a semi-circle. This part of Prague also includes the Červený Vrch suburb, which was named after the Červený vrch Hill.

On the border of Vokovice is the luxurious Šárka Valley with the Džbán reservoir, making it a pleasant residential locality. Above all, it is luxurious location and the metro to Nádraží Veleslavín (you can reach Můstek on line A from here in about 10 minutes) that make this quarter in Prague 6 an attractive and desirable place to live.

Every place in Prague has its particular charm. Be it a historical area or just a picturesque corner made up of small streets, every place has a specific atmosphere. The same applies to Střešovice, which can boast the last enclave of village architecture in Prague. Once again a cultural historical zone with a different look.

Střešovice

This quarter is located in western Prague, wedged between Dejvice, Břevnov, Veleslavín and Hradčany. It is labelled Prague 6 and currently retains the last remains of former village life beyond the city limits.

You can enjoy the picturesque buildings that testify to bygone times, because in the 18th Century Střešovice served as the economic centre for the Strahov Monastery. Increased construction began at the turn of the 18th and 19th Centuries. This was due to the expansion of the monastery, with newly arriving employees. Modern buildings were constructed in the 20th Century in luxury villa districts like Ořechovka, based on a project for a garden city by Jaroslav Vondrák and Jan Šenkýř.

Genius loci of Střešovice

Apart from Ořechovka, there are other villa districts in the area, such as Baterie on the boundary between Střešovice and Břevnov. Old estate, tireless witnesses of archaic times – Petynka, Kajetánka, Malovanka. Old Střešovice (Velké Střešovice), spreading over the western slope of Střešovice Hill and its essence, represented by workers’ houses and a bell tower. In 2003, this area was declared a protected historical zone, as was Střešovičky (Malé Střešovice), where the houses are better preserved and intact.

Luxury monuments and tourist destinations

In addition to luxury houses (Müller Villa by Adolf Loos, Hypšman Villa, villa and studio of painter Emil Filla, villa and studio of painter Václav Špála), which were home to famous personalities or were designed by important architects, there are quiet locations which have been marked by the merciless tooth of time. At first glance, they look like ruins, but they conceal something magical, mysterious. They highlight the indifference of society, while concealing the secrets of the stories lived in them.
