Velká Chuchle – 9 September: Prague Polo Cup 2017 open to the public for the first time!
The 5th year of the international polo tournament will see matches between teams from Great Britain, Germany, Scandinavia, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and domestic clubs from Prague and Moravia. Velká Chuchle will welcome the Aviator Club, Danube Polo Club, Noe Polo Club, Orchestr8, Panamerica and Prague Country & Polo Club.
Popular traditions: Extravagant hats and sod stomping
This exceptional social affair cannot make do without its traditional features, these being none other than ladies in extravagant luxury headpieces and the stomping of sod between the matches. There will be a contest for the most beautiful hat, so choose carefully if you are planning to attend!
Luxury sport of the Indian elite
Polo has an extensive tradition and is considered to be the oldest sport in the history of humankind. The origins of polo date back to the 6th Century BC in ancient Persia. It was a popular game in India, especially at the courts of the local nobility. It only came to Europe with English officers in the middle of the 19th Century. The world’s best players are from Argentina, where polo is considered to be the national sport.
Polo has simple rules
If you aren’t familiar with the rules of the game, they are fairly simple. There are 4 players on the team. The game is divided into 4 periods (chukka), each lasting 7 minutes. The aim of the game is to pass the ball through the opponent’s goal using mallets. After each goal, the teams change places to keep the game fair. Horses are often changed as well, to prevent them from tiring. The team that scores the most goals against the opponent wins.
