Here we go! The American Film Academy has already announced this year's nominated films that will fight for the golden statuette that pretty much everyone in the film industry wishes to have on their shelf in California on February 9. For some, the announcement was a great and joyous surprise, but others couldn't believe their eyes when they didn't find their name on the list. Let's face it, life isn't fair, but do the jurors from the Academy really judge the movies independently, in an unbiased and objective manner? Aren't they, by any chance, picking favorites? The announcement was followed by quite a lively debate in international media. Let's take a look at the nominees and find out what the issue with this year's Oscars actually is.
Good News!
But first, let's start with the good news that probably won't surprise anyone. Joker, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite - the first South Korean film in history to make it this far. It received the total of four nominations. Congratulations!

In the Best Actor category, actors Antonio Banderas (for Pain and Glory), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Joaquin Phoenix, who starred in the leading role in the film Joker and also succeeded in Golden Globes, will compete.

Honestly, I admit that I'd be unable to pick one name out of the aforementioned selection of artists, whom I'd wish to win the Oscar more than the others, and it definitely won't be an easy task for jurors either. But if I were to mention at least one favorite, Phoenix would surely deserve the award for his portrayl of the mad clown in the making.

Fight like a girl
Scarlett Johansson (for Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women), Charlize Theron (Bombshell), Renee Zellweger (Judy), and Cynthia Eriva (Harriet) will compete in a rigorous combat for the Best Actress award. In this category, it won't be an easy choice either.

After watching Netflix's Marriage Story, I personally wish the golden statuette went to Scarlett Johansson, who's been nominated for the Oscar for the first time this year. If you haven't seen the movie, you can look forward to a raw story of a marriage break-up. This family drama is very touching, while raising questions about the institution of marriage at the same time. Renée Zellweger with her flawless portrayal of the legendary Judy Garland is another favorite of mine.

Jennifer Lopez, Eddie Murphy and Disney missed out
According to international media, Jennifer Lopez, who portrayed a stripper in the movie "Hustlers", was in for a big shock this year. Even though she hadn't won a Golden Globe, she was positive she would get at least a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance. And she was wrong. That raised questions as to whether the jurors had seen the movie at all, or simply skimmed past it, thinking it didn't deserve more attention - although it made more than $ 100 million on the other side of the ocean. Actor Eddie Murphy, who received two Golden Globe nominations for the film Dolemite Is My Name and was also considered a strong candidate, was not shortlisted for the Oscars either.

When the nominations were being announced, the same disappointment awaited the creator of the animated fairy tale Frozen 2. The story of the two sisters Anna and Else, known to pretty much every child around the globe, was put to shame by cartoons such as Toy Story 4, How to Train Your Dragon, Missing Link, I lost my body or Klaus. Frozen 2 will compete for a title only in the Best Original Song category this February.
The Painted Bird stays at home, Daughter goes to America
Although Václav Marhoul's film The Painted Bird hasn't made it into this year's nominations, Czechs still have a chance to shine in the world. The Czech film Daughter by FAMU student Daria Kaščejevová was nominated in the Best Animated Short Film category. If you haven't had a chance to see the movie yet, check out the trailer below. The Oscars have a total of 24 categories; you'll be able to watch the award ceremony on the night of February 9-10.
