The shaggy Husky from the harsh environment of Siberia is not for everyone.
The Siberian Husky is a luxurious, elegant and hardy breed which, despite the fact that it is regarded as American, comes from the harsh environment of Siberia.
Its origin is said to be the area around the River Kolyma, where it was already bred in prehistoric times by the Chukchi nomads who lived there at that time. These dogs pulled their sleds, transported heavy loads and were used for hunting. They made it to North America in the middle of the 19th century together with merchants and even today, this luxury breed is most popular in the USA and Canada.
The Husky was mainly popular in the mid-1920s.
These loyal dogs were responsible for saving a lot of people in 1925. When a diphtheria epidemic broke out in the Nome prospecting centre in Alaska, it was only thanks to the stamina, resilience and strength of the Siberian Huskies that doctors were able to overcome a journey of 300 km through a snow storm to deliver the required medicine on time on sleds.
A dogsled race is held every year between the towns of Anchorage and Nome to commemorate this story. But this is by far not the only race of its kind. Dogsled races are held every year in several locations in the USA and Canada.
The Husky needs an active life
During World War Two, Huskies were used as rescue dogs and helped searching for people. They have been pack dogs since time immemorial and for this reason they don’t like being alone even today. The Husky is a very friendly breed, but one which does require systematic training. Owners of these luxurious Huskies must be patient and thorough.
The Husky is a natural hunter, it is independent, free-thinking and bursting with energy which it must use up, otherwise it will never be happy. This luxury breed which doesn’t tire easily would not be happy in the city without any exercise. On the contrary, it appreciates a lot of activity and being outside all year round.
