The term ‘technological innovation’ is defined as an activity that presents new products, their distribution and unique use. For many people, tyres are round, black and all the same. Nevertheless, they conceal many years of work, research, development and testing of all their elements, such as their structure or tread pattern.

Pirelli presents coloured tyres

You can admire both the looks and the brains of the new luxury Pirelli tyres. In Geneva, the brand presented a colourful edition and new integrated system that speaks to the driver: Pirelli Connesso. These two innovations are married in the P Zero and Winter Sottozero tyres, the best series of Pirelli summer and winter tyres.

The past 5 years have seen a rising demand for personalisation. Tyres are delivered in 4 basic colours: red, yellow, white and silver, but any colour can be made on request. The colours remain visible even if they are used every day, because Pirelli has developed a special marking system that does not lose colour or intensity.

Intelligent tyres with built-in sensors

Tyre evolution has reached the moment when tyres have become intelligent and interactive. How? An integrated platform using sensors, which are built into the tyre and provide the driver within information about the tyre’s statue, wear and need for maintenance, which appears on the dashboard. As a result, even the most demanding drivers can improve the performance of their luxury cars, reduce fuel consumption and increase the efficiency of tyre management.

The built-in sensor weighs just a few grams and has no impact on the overall performance of the tyres.

Data from the sensor is stored on the corporate cloud, allowing operators to access it as well. They process the data and send it back to the application. Thus, the driver receives information about the tyre pressure. The application warns the driver if the pressure is low and close to the limit when pumping is required. It can also identify the nearest repair shop and arrange an appointment without long waiting periods.

Digital future

In the future, Pirelli is planning to add other remote-controlled functions which will allow drivers to manage their luxury tyres more efficiently. They also plan to upgrade the content for the Pirelli Connesso community, including the option of interacting with other smartphone apps, for instance the acquisition of information about the situation on nearby roads and the possibility of leaving reviews of the shops that repaired your tyres.

Pirelli Connesso will be available starting this summer, first in the USA and then on key markets in Europe and East Asia. Sales will be launched in the summer, but the smallest available size is 19”, meaning that the owners of cheaper cars are out of luck for now. Prices are not yet known.
