Finally, the nominees of the 91st year of the Oscar Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have been announced. Eight films have been nominated for the Best Picture Award, equally dominated by the films Roma and The Favourite, each with ten nominations. Closely behind are films, A Star Is Born, Vice and Black Panther with eight nominations each.
The American Motion Picture Academy will hold the awarding ceremony of the Oscars on the 24th February. The opportunity to cast a ballot to receive this award, which is the highest award one can get in the film world, was available for about 350 films. On the 22nd of January, this number was reduced by the Academy to 10 films. Which ones are they? Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born, and Vice.
The Czech’s iron in the fire, film Všechno bude (Winter Flies), didn’t make it to the second nominee selection round, in which an expert jury chooses the final contestants for the Oscars.
The yearly ceremony began taking place two years after the director of MGM Louis Mayer established the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The first award ceremony was held in Los Angeles on the 16th of May 1929 at the Roosevelt hotel. The ceremony was the summary of two years, therefore there were two award recipients: Wings and Sunrise. The listed categories were film, directing, female acting performance, male acting performance, camera and script. Today, there is a total of 24 categories.
The Oscars ceremony was first televised in 1953, but only in USA and Canada. The amount of viewers wasn’t very high, because there were only a few hundred thousand people who sat down to their TV. Today, the ceremony is streamed live in more than 200 countries, and is watched by around 50 million viewers.
