Fighting style popular since the ancient world

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), a mix of different martial arts has been popular since the ancient Olympics in the form of brutal Pankration. The year 1993 is considered to be the beginning of the modern MMA and the creation of the UFC – Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Oktagon is the most famous MMA organisation in the Czech Republic. It was founded by sports commentator Ondřej Novotný. "I started with other martial sports – boxing, I later commented on Thai boxing, K1, during that time I watched the final MMA matches, in the Czech and foreign scene, especially the UFC. It was UFC that managed to sell it to the fans, managed to get the best fighters there and today they are top athletes. And what I enjoy the most is the attraction! You never know what will happen, almost everyone can beat everyone, betting is terribly difficult," he said.

Today, MMA popularity is the fastest growing in the world.

Top wrestlers earn a lot of money. The situation was different twenty years ago. The wrestlers fought in the style of Vale Tudo; there were almost no rules in the cage. The first generation of fighters, called the modern gladiators, also includes Dan Barták. "I have always considered it to be a sport, I trained hard," said Barták, today a coach who has become the champion of the Czech Republic in Vale Tudo twice and the European champion in Brazilian jiu jitsu. Today he is one of the most successful coaches in the Czech Republic. He trained Viktor Pešta, who also fought in the most prestigious UFC world competition.  

At present, however, MMA fight is the most comprehensive set of combat skills and styles leading to the most effective attack or defence, aimed to gaining predominance over the opponent and the fighter’s own "mind". It is one of the most physically challenging sports in the world and is compared to a fighting triathlon. MMA provokes our long-forgotten instincts, breaks myths and brings a new look to the 21st century gladiators!

Mike Tyson (52)

One of the most popular heavyweight boxers in the modern era. Mike was the most dangerous boxer due to his roughness and loutish; nevertheless, he became a heavyweight champion when he was 19.

Amir Khan (31)

British boxer with Pakistani roots Amir Khan is considered one of today’s greatest talents. In 2004, he won the silver medal at the Olympics as a seventeen-year-old amateur. He gained his first professional title at the age of twenty-two, becoming the youngest British champion in history.

Timothy Bradley (35)

American boxer Timothy Ray Bradley Jr. is the current WBO World Champion. Due to his speed, the commentators of boxing gala evenings introduce him as The Desert Storm. He is unbeaten in the professional ring; he has won all matches except for one.

Rocky Marciano († 46)

Although many people do not know his full name, everyone knows who Rocky is. He is the only heavy weight boxer who retired from the ring without ever being defeated by anyone. His career includes unbelievable 49 victories, of which 43 were K.O. and he never tasted the ring floor. His popularity was greatest during the time of his utter invincibility, and after his retirement, a film was made, in which his battle with Muhammad Ali was reconstructed to the last detail.

Muhammad Ali († 74)

He is considered the best boxer of all time, but some of them describe him as the best athlete of all time, too. His style was graceful, elegant, yet utterly deadly. Many professional boxers try to learn his technique. Ali, however, is not only valued for his sporting performances, but also for helping to raise confidence in the black community living in the US at the time of his greatest success, he help it rely on its ideals and show its disagreement with the discrimination it had to face at that time.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41)

The world’s best-paid athlete that is full of controversy for quick blows and provocations. It is basically the embodiment of today's boxing style and so it is supposed to be given the fact that he managed to break the record when he attracted 2.5 million spectators to his match.

Ondřej Pála (34)

The best Czech professional heavyweight boxer. He also tried judo, Thai boxing and jiu-jitsu, but eventually boxing won. Beside boxing, Ondřej likes fishing, fast cars and snowboarding.

Keith Thurman (29)

Out of the ring, American boxer is a thinking man who reads philosophical books with and in his spare time he takes care of his two Chihuahuas. But once the gong sounds, the other side comes to the surface. He is fierce, he hits hard, and that’s why he has won most of his matches by knocking his opponent out. His nickname is "One Time ".
