American designer Thom Browne founded his own brand fifteen years ago. But even before that he managed to acquire rich work experience alongside the greatest fashion icons, Giorgio Armani or Ralph Lauren. Currently the experienced designer creates both men's as well as women's luxury collections.
Exactly that could be the heading of the SS 2019 collection Here the creative designer combines what is impossible to combine, using perhaps all shades of the colour palette, layering one piece of luxury clothing over another, mainly aiming to shock.
The collection of Thom Browne consists of colourful coats, jackets and vests, trousers with narrow or wide trouser legs, straw hats, stylish moccasins but also crazy clownish boots. The most daring piece of the entire luxury collection is a skirt which the designer made for men!
As if that is not enough, the already bold models feature stripes, checks, motifs of whales, sailboats and crabs.
The cherry on the cake of the whole fashion show were the props. The areas of École des Beaux-Arts were filled by a flood of flowers, balloons, colourful fence, a green lawn, garden gnomes and houses. This offers a question of where did you actually find yourself? At a fashion show, or perhaps the most magical of fairy tales?
"Clown Land" as seen by Thom Browne
At other times a sharply elegant man and fashion designer in one person has exhibited something totally unprecedented. To tell the truth, already the introduction was off-putting for me and I thought that it will hardly get better later on.
One of the most bizarre pieces was definitely the pink coat with crab motif, as well as those clownish boots on high soles. Some may have thought that entertaining, but to me it was completely repulsive. The only positive thing was that I got a craving for a crab cocktail with avocado. :-)
And finally to top it all off, the biggest abomination was the grey garden gnome with a wheelbarrow full of flowers. The problem was with the spiky hat; it makes me think of a garment of Ku Klux Klan members. Yes precisely that group, promoting dominance of whites, racial segregation, anti-Semitism, racism, anti-Catholicism and resistance to non-white immigration. I very much hope that that is just a coincidence...
