The Cannes Festival has a Winner: The Golden Palm was Awarded to the Japanese Drama, Shoplifters
The golden palm was won this year by the luxurious Japanese drama, Shoplifters by director Hirokazu Kore-eda. The film which will come to our cinemas in October, is about thieves who take care of a child from the streets. Great prize was awarded to Spike Lee for a film about racism, called BlacKkKlansman.
The Golden Palm was awarded to Shoplifters
The drama entitled Shoplifters shows the current middle class in Japan. The luxury jury headed by the Australian actress, Cate Blanchett determined the winner. The 55-year old director is not too well known from commercial movies, but in independent film he is a greatly appreciated author.
The grand jury prize
The grand jury prize was awarded to an American, Spike Lee, for drama BlacKkKlansman, based on a true story of a black police officer, who at the end of the 1970s infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan, the South American militant organisation promoting dominance of whites. The main hero is a 33-year old former American football player, John David Washington.
Prize for Directorship
The Polish author of the Oscar drama, who lives in Britain, Ida Pawel Pawlikowski won the luxury prize for directorship of the film Cold War, which took place between the 40´s and 60´s of the last century, reaching from France to Poland. In Cannes it enjoyed recognition by standing ovations and we can look forward to the picture at festival in Karlovy Vary.
Further awards
The Best Actress became Samal Esljamov for performance in the new film, Ayka, of the Kazakhstan director, Sergej Dvorcevoj. The award of the Best Actor was given by the jury to Marcell Donte, for his role of a worker in a canine barber shop, who stands up to local mafia in the film Dogman by Italian director Matteo Garrone.
The Best Screenplay statuettes were won by two women at the same time, one was awarded to Italian Alice Rohrwacher for film Lazzaro felice (Happy Lazzaro), presenting a story of a young Italian struggling with city life, and to Nader Saeivar for the picture Se rokh (Three Faces).
Special prize was awarded by the jury to director Jeanu-Luc Godar for the film Le livre d'image, which is based on the present as well as the past of Middle East.
The Jury Prize was won by the Lebanese actress and director Nadine Labaki, author of the luxury title Cafarnaúm, which tells the story of a 12-year old boy from Beirut´s slums who sues his parents for giving him life and thus bringing him into such a terrible hopeless world.
The luxurious ceremony began untraditionally when, even before the awarding of the first prizes, the actress Asia Argento, told the three thousands guests in the hall: "In 1997 here in Cannes I was raped by Harvey Weinstein. I was 21 years old. The festival was his fishing grounds. He will never be welcomed here."
