Contemporary art in London is represented by the Saatchi Gallery, founded in 1985 by Charles Saatchi. He had incredibly interesting art collections, and he wanted to share these with the world. The collections of Charles Saatchi evolved over time. Originally, they consisted of minimalism art by American painters; later they contained the works of young artists from Great Britain, and in their final form they were collections of paintings by well-established European authors.

Authors of collections in the Saatchi Gallery

The authors who contributed to the minimalism collections in the gallery included Jeff Koons, Ashley Bickerton, David Salle, Carrol Dunham, Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharff or Donald Judd. These also served as inspiration for the Young British Artists, who then contributed to the gallery collections in the nineties.

A fire in 2004 destroyed part of the collections, estimated at 50,000,000 pounds. From the next year onward, the Saatchi Gallery refocused itself on the works of established European authors such as Marlene Dumas, Martin Kippenberger, Luc Tuymans and Peter Doig.

The interiors of the gallery are modern and simple and excel thanks to its high ceilings, which serve as an excellent canvas for all sorts of special events. The capacity of the gallery is 1500 visitors.

The galley changes its exhibits about 3 to 4 times per year. The Painter’s Painters exhibit will take place from 30 November; it will introduce the work of contemporary artists such as Bjarne Melgaard, Raffi Kalenderian or David Salle.
