The luxurious small district of Prague on the edge of Hradčany, adjacent to Břevnov and Strahov, is often the starting point for tourists aiming to visit Prague Castle and to continue further down to Charles Bridge.

Fire and the Famous Names in the Prague district of Pohořelec

Pohořelec

This is a very quiet place with a magnificent location for those who are able to appreciate the beauty and the atmosphere of the old city of Prague. If you live here, meeting tourists is inevitable. However, it is more peaceful than the burgeoning chaos such as there is for example within the luxury Old Town.

There are records of the district of Pohořelec as far back as the Chronicle of Kosmas. In the 11th century it was the suburb of Hradčany, which served as a market settlement. At the end of the century it was destroyed by fire and the same disaster happened a few centuries later the during bloody fights with the Hussites.

But the fire has not been extinguished for long. In 1541 the place went up in flames again, only to be repeated once more in the 18th century, when the French broke into the capital. As must be clear to you now, this is what the quarter was named after (Trans. Note: Pohořelec means Burned Down). The quarter was allegedly named Pohořelec as far back as in the 14th century, but fires continued to trouble the place even much later. We only hope that it will not be repeated...

Pohořelec is not known only for fires

The place is not only famous for destructive fires. Here you can find houses of admirable architecture, with notable historical gables, luxurious façades and house emblems. An interesting monument to the past times is the house Golden Lion (U Zlatého lva) or the luxurious Golden Tree (U Zlatého stromu).

Pohořelec spreads between the Loreto Street and Úvoz, leading to Prague Castle. And in the centre of this area you can find the proud dominant, the memorial of Saint John of Nepomuk.

We have one more interesting piece of information: at the turn of the 16th and 17th century there was a luxury observatory of the famous astrologist, Tycho de Brahe, who worked together with Jan Kepler.

The Legend of Pohořelec

Every magical and charming place such as this must have its own legend. Pohořelec has one, too. It says that this is the place where countess Drahomíra was punished for her shameful deed; she plotted the murder of her mother-in-law, St. Ludmila at the Tetín fortress. This is where Drahomíra plunged into the burning flames of Hell for her appalling act!

The Alš Bank, although not dominant in any way is worth noting. When going for a walk in Prague it presents a cosy and picturesque area serving as a relaxation oasis, offering a view of the Vltava River. Are you not convinced? Then plan its visit!

Alšovo nábřeží

The Alš Riverbank is one side bordered by the romantic Vltava River, on the other by luxurious buildings. It leads from the site of Rudolfinum and continues in the direction of Charles Bridge along the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design and Higher Medical and Technical School. In this spot the riverbank turns into a pedestrian zone and ends at the Four Seasons Hotel from where it continues through the Platnéř Street.

Beautiful and quiet place near the river

At Rudolfinum you can relax in the pleasant park, dominated by the statue of Josef Mánes, the most important representative of Czech romanticism. If you cross to the opposite side, to the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design, you will discover a luxurious little park with the memorial of Jan Palach, represented by the sculptural group House of the Son and House of the Mother.

You will find here benches in beautifully kept greenery, offering a very pleasant seating near the Vltava River. Behind you is the luxurious Four Seasons hotel with the renowned Prague restaurants, Cotto Crudo.

Daydream a little and imagine the past: no luxury here!

A few centuries ago these luxurious buildings have not yet been constructed and the now picturesque waterfront was desolate. There was a ford crossing here and a wooden bridge later, becoming a link with the other side of the Vltava River. The wooden bridge was eventually replaced by a chain walkway. Today, when looking at the massive Mánes Bridge, this seems almost unbelievable.

By the end of the 19th century, Alš Riverbank bore the name of Lower Riverbank and there was also the ´Lower´ ferry. Contrariwise, on the Kampa side there was the ´Upper´ Riverbank. A much nicer name originated but a few years later, when the riverbank was renamed to the embankment of Crown Prince Rudolph. It has been recognised under its current name since 1919. Take a little time off to visit it during your wandering through Prague.
