BMW offered a glimpse of the future of motorcycle safety systems with its new prototype R 1200 RS ConnectedRide at the CMC Conference in Munich this month.
The luxury motorcycles will be equipped with an assistant that warns about vehicles pulling up alongside, and an assistant for left turning. There will also be other systems to ensure safety movement on the road. These should prevent accidents between motorcycles and vehicles. A warning will be issued to drivers who may not give right of way based on a behavioural evaluation by the system, and it will also warn the rider on the motorcycle.
The deluxe Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) warning system register dangerous situations and warns the driver. It is based on communication between manufacturers and very precise localisations thanks to the DGNSS satellite system.
The Connected Motorcycle Consortium (CMC) was established by automobile manufacturers BMW Motorrad, Honda and Yamaha in 2016. It is the only global consortium for motorcycle safety. The aim is to support the comprehensive use of cooperative safety systems across all manufacturers in order to improve safety on roads and increase the joy of luxury riding.
