Although KAWS nowadays already distances himself from graffiti and street art, his influence on art in the streets is undeniable. The earlier works which he created on billboards and adverts on bus stops are considered to be ground-breaking.
You may have somewhere noticed luxury larger-than-life figures which are slightly reminiscent of Mickey Mouse. These are the work of this gifted artist. His huge sculptures of cartoon characters, which he has enhanced with his unique style, have inspired many other artists and become interesting and original decorations for public spaces.
KAWS has moved away from the art of graffiti and set out in a different direction – to conquer the world of plastic toys, fashion and fine art. He devotes his efforts to sculptures, paintings and also design of plastic figures. His figures are influenced by pop art and we can also see in them a similarity with the illustrations of the contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.
KAWS studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and also started with graffiti there in the 1990s.
You can find his work in collections in the High Museum in Atlanta, the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth and the Rosenblum Collection in Paris. KAWS is continually blurring the boundaries between fine and commercial art. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.
