In creating the new collection, French fashion designer and creative director of Louis Vuitton Nicolas Ghesquière ventured into the past, present and even took a peek into the infinite future. He treated fashion as a game based on emotions, a unique style, unforgettable colors and glamorous cuts. Did he do well? Our fashion editors and actress and model Kateřina Klausová took a hard look at that.
“I looked somewhere that has been calling out to me for a long time, somewhere I hadn’t taken the time to go back to. It was like a reset to uncover one inspiration after another...”
Cruise 2021 carries in the spirit of creative freedom. Among other things, it plays with the iconic Louis Vuitton motif, mixed with a floral monogram and, somewhat untraditionally, with decks of playing cards. What's the symbolism behind this? The power and ability of a game to cultivate a community. And that's quite a commendable purpose, don't you think?!
But when we look away from this higher purpose and approach the Cruise 2021 collection with critical eyes, we feel disappointed… severely disappointed. The collection could be best described as a vortex of chaos - or a circus. An abundance of ruffles, a mermaid-shaped skirt combined with a shirt and a colorful sweater, or bumblebee leggings paired with a tie, a jacket and pumps? Our eyes are literally bleeding!
The biggest flop? We are pretty sure it's this outfit, which is a perfect choice if you want to look like someone who has a ton of money but zero taste to go with it. Ugh… Pure fashion hell!
Even in such an embarrassing collection as Cruise 2021, one can find several outfits that actually aren't half bad! What do you think about this striped dress, the purple mini dress combined with a luxurious white trench coat or the romantic model in a nude shade paired with a lovely gray cape? We could definitely find space for these in our closet!
If there's anything we'd kill for in this collection, it's shoes! Those ankle shoes in pastel yellow and black, the luxurious minimalist pumps in divine blue (by the way, it's the color of 2020) and gray or stylish black and white sneakers? Simply perfect!
Louis Vuitton. For me, it's one of those classic luxury brands, whose logo is widely known around the world and appears in a number of fake versions, such as Lucky Valentine. In short, every girl wants to have one LV in her closet. Personally, I classify their clientele into two categories. The representatives of the first category spend three years saving up for a handbag covered with the famous logo and carry it in a protective cover for another two years. Those who fall into the second category visit Vuitton stores about as often as they visit the supermarket. On second thought... this kind of people probably don't shop in supermarkets.
And I'd rather recommend the Cruise 2021 collection to the second group. It's a bit like with Gucci. Bolder models, wild prints, lots of colors... kind of childike, playful, which can be nice for a change, but from my point of view, you won't enjoy it for longer than one season. It's simply not worth your savings from the last 213 monthly wages.
It's becoming a kind of habit of mine to choose more wearable things from each collection (if you really insist on this Cruise thing) and I can sort of imagine wearing this dress more than once. I like the color combination (yeah, I know, I'm a bit repetitive with those beiges and dark blues...) and the pattern reminds me of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. And in the spirit of "go big or go home", I'll throw in a card handbag and call full house, ladies and gentlemen!
I do like the pants, they're oddly cool! And I'd like to say that the color combination... okay, okay, I'll shut up, but you know what I was going to write anyway (it's great!!). They'll go well with a white, red, black and, judging by the pumps, even a gray T-shirt, creating a unique outfit that won't make it seem like you're trying too hard. As for the blouse - I spent a while trying to figure out what kind of print was that supposed to be, and I came to the conclusion that it's a galaxy. Alright then, give me some space, but be so kind and remove the ruffle! Thanks.
Finally, we're getting to what I've mentioned at the beginning. The Cruise 2021 Speedy bag is a typical one-season item. But if you have some extra zeros in your account, Louis happens to be your favorite designer and you don't care about classic timeless pieces, then this is your wild card. But wait, I've just noticed the pants and... they're not that bad either. I mean, I'm not gonna run to the store to grab them as fast as possible, but compared to some other brands... On the other hand, my standards may be really low after seeing all the men's "collections".
I don't get why, but I've been eying this card box for quite some time already. Reason unknown. One thing is for sure, it won't be cheap, because when I happen to like something, it's usually one of the most expensive items. Great. The expression of the model distracts me from the dress; I wish I could wipe it off her face. With a fist. But I'll do my best to focus my attention. Alright, I'm not a big fan of combining orange with red, but together with the gray and the shirt style, I'm willing to tolerate it. The belt, though, is really interesting. Actually, it's pretty cool... I guess I'll have to look if my paycheck has already arrived.
