Each stage in the history of humanity brings with it something ground-breaking in the field of science, technology, philosophy, political opinion or artistic style. Things were no different in the period after the Battle of White Mountain, which brought society new aesthetic approaches and changed the religious and political circumstances in the country.

Over the course of the 16th – 18th century, echoes of the artistic events in Spain and Italy arrived in the Czech Republic. The actual name originally indicated a pearl of irregular shape – from the Portuguese “pérola barroca”. The name gradually became commonplace and started to be used for the whole artistic epoch, revelling in dramatic depiction of reality.

A game of light and shadow

If you stand in front of the pictures of leading Baroque painters such as Caravaggio, Velázquez, Petr Brandl, Karel Škréta or Jan Kupecký, expect a whirlwind of dynamically changing landscapes, naturalistically conceived portraits with an inner darkened atmosphere or on the contrary dramatically lit details. The Baroque celebrates plump female shapes. Man as the theme features just as God created him.

Baroque architecture

In the Czech lands, monuments with Baroque features are the best preserved and most widespread and the gems among them in particular include buildings in the so-called Baroque Gothic style represented by the artist J. S. Aichel. He managed to create works combining Gothic purity of form with the emotional colour and grandeur of the Baroque.

What is it like to live in a Baroque building?

Apart from church buildings and chateaux, luxury commercial buildings and homes were also built. You can try a bit of a historicising mood in one of the Baroque apartment blocks dating back to 1708 which is located a few metres from Charles Bridge and the Lesser Town Bridge Tower. If you long for renovated premises with period features, this flat with 232 m2 of floor space and a spacious terrace (10 m2) is tailored precisely to suit your requirements. Who would not want to live in the picturesque surroundings of the Lesser Town, to take advantage of all of the achievements of modern civilisation yet have a little piece of history within easy reach?

Office space in a Baroque building

If you approach renovation of historical premises with respect and passion, this could result in a unique work as is the case in Prague 1. Individual features of the façade were repaired by hand by a skilled plasterer, the interior corresponds to the beliefs of the time and the modern era offers spacious offices, meeting rooms, a grand reception and much more, functionally prepared for a successful business.
