The Japanese are well known for their creativity and for their attention to the smallest details. Not surprisingly, they have uplifted their already beautiful and delicious sushi to an even higher level of creativity by turning sushi into an art form, which is totally edible. In fact, they have even given this art form a new name, “Mosaic Sushi”.
Almost everyone is familiar with the well-known sushi roll containing salmon, avocado and cucumber. Thanks to Japanese ingenuity, these same ingredients have now been uplifted into an even more luxurious dish, which is a luxury version of sushi – mosaic sushi.
The individual components are stacked together into a square shape so that between them are vibrant color contrasts. This gives you amazingly colorful and visually appealing composition with food that looks and tastes amazing. It's a bit of a laborious version of the classic sushi, but certainly worth a try.
The word “sushi” actually comes from the Japanese word for "sour rice" and that's because the rice is seasoned with rice vinegar. This remains true for mosaic sushi. Essentially everything remains the same, but mosaic sushi requires the use of some additional ingredients to achieve the best results.
Another difference is that the ingredients aren’t rolled just once, but rather several times. It is up to each chef to create their own final version of this dish, but basically it all starts with the above-noted familiar ingredients. To these ingredients once can choose to add carrots, crab sticks, shitake mushrooms and tuna. The more colors used, the more luxurious your mosaic sushi be. And, this is just the beginning of what mosaic sushi has to offer. There are endless variations.
If you don't have the ingredients in stock, don’t worry. You can buy all of the necessary ingredients to prepare this luxury version of sushi and other Asian dishes at London's Japan Center.
