Director Olmo Omerzu will go to America with the film Winter Flies. It was selected from a total of twenty-one Czech feature and documentary films. The nomination was decided on by the members of the Czech Film and Television Academy.
The film Winter Flies beat the films Domestique, Jan Palach, Toman or Úsměvy smutných mužů. Winter Flies won the award for Best Director at this year's international film festival in Karlovy Vary and was created in Czech-Slovenian-Slovak-Polish co-production.
The road movie about friendship between boys, adventure and great freedom. The 14-year-old outsider Mára (Tomáš Mrvík) and his friend, 12-year-old Heduš (Jan František Uher) take a trip to find freedom. In a stolen car they set out for a trip across the entire republic. The inspiration was a real police report and the main characters were played by non-actors Tomáš Mrvík and Jan František Uher. During the escape, the police stop them and a policewoman (Lenka Vlasáková) and policeman (Martin Pechlát) interrogate them at the station. Sometimes you're hardly breathing and wondering whether the story is about reality or a child's fantasy.
Olmo Omerzu came out three years ago with a great movie called Family Film. With this year's film he amazed not only the domestic audience, but also the foreign. The chance to get an Oscar is high. "I firmly believe that Winter Flies is a film that shows the theme of growing in a particular way. I hope the viewer will absorb the flow of childhood fantasy, in which lies and truth form an inseparable whole," says the director.

Will the movie Winter Flies walk in the footsteps of Kolja?
The Oscar for the best non-English-spoken film was won in 1966 by director duo Ján Kádár and Elmar Klos for the drama from the Second World War The Shop on Main Street. Jiří Menzel won an Oscar in the same category in 1968 for his feature-length debut of the Closely Watched Trains. The most famous Czech director, Miloš Forman, won his two Oscars when already living in America, although he had been nominated for Loves of a Blonde (1967) and The Firemen's Ball (1969). Forman's first Oscar was for One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1976), the second for Amadeus (1985), which also brought an Academy Award to Theodore Pištěk for costumes and to stage designer Karel Černý. The last Czech film that turned its Oscar nomination into a victory was the film by Jan Svěrák, Kolja, in 1997. Since then, Jan Hřebejk has been nominated for the best foreign language film for the tragicomedy Divided We Fall (2001) and Ondřej Trojan for Želary (2004).
