Hanspaulka is named after Mr. Hans Paul Hippman. We know from history that in 1773, the then inspector of the archbishop's estates in 1773 built the Baroque-Rococo luxury summer manor with views over Prague on the site of an old vineyard farmhouse. Other villas were built from the 19th Century onwards. The villa district begins above the functionalist complex of French schools. Its territory is delimited on the northwest of the beautiful Šárka Valley, on the east by the slope facing Juliska, and to the south and west by Evropská boulevard and Horoměřická Street.
Many exceptional architecturally and interesting luxury villas and family homes were building here until the Second World War. The area gradually got a school and other essential civic amenities.
Most of the estates in Hanspaulka date back to the period when wine cultivation was developed, originating from the former wine presses. They have often been preserved to this day, despite undergoing reconstruction. During the new construction of Dejvice after 1922, the building plans respected the original estates, and only Santinka, Juliska, Šťáhlavka, Paťanka (after 1945) and Mydlářka (in the late 1970s) disappeared.
After the war, the face of this location changed significantly. Open premises were gradually built up in a different manner, especially with buildings featuring functionalist style. In the 1950s, buildings designed according to socialist-realism took over. We can still see it in Sušická, Na Pískách and other streets. 30 years later, the buildings were supplemented with attic apartments.
In addition to the names mentioned above, the area was also home to painter and graphic designer Cyril Bouda or member of the Devětsilu group, architect Evžen Linhart. Today, famous graphic designer and painter Jiří Anderle is among those living at Hanspaulka.
