Karel Gott was not only a legendary singer, loved by the entire nation, but also an excellent painter. He started painting in his childhood; he particularly liked to depict funerals. Later, he switched to painting mainly women. The maestro would usually give his pictures to family and friends, although his fans have always been interested in his works. And now there is a chance to procure one! A painting from 2006 depicting President Václav Havel is going up for auction.
"The inscription on the painting "The divas sing for President Havel" may indicate Karel Gott's affection for former President Václav Havel. The painting was framed in the workshop of Mr. Viktor Brůžek, as evidenced not only by the mark on the back of the frame, but also by his written confirmation that he framed this painting for the artist,"
The maestro portrayed the president in a peculiar way. Havel's face is actually missing, a stamp with his likeness affixed in its place.
Jakubec believes that Gott wanted to depict both of Havel's faces. The stamp depicts him as a statesman and the outline of a face surrounded by women him as a bohemian.
"The image is painted in oil paints on canvas with an inserted postage stamp of Václav Havel. With a bit of exaggeration, we could say that the image also contains the master's DNA. Its dimensions are 33.5 x 31 cm or, with the frame included, 46.5 x 44 cm,"
But the divas surrounding the president are not recognizable. Basically, the public can only guess which beauties they are supposed to be. Nobody really knows for sure.
The starting price of the painting is very symbolic, namely 1,000 crowns, however Jakubec believes that the selling price will exceed one million crowns. Candidates can bid for a whole month. The auction of this work will start on May 29, 2020 at noon and you can monitor its progress on the website www.obrazyvaukci.cz. It will end on June 25, 2020 at 8 p.m.
