Alfons Mucha does not need long introductions. This excellent Czech painter and illustrator, graphics and decorative art designer is the best-known representative of Art Nouveau, artistic style at the beginning of the last century. The Paris Musée du Luxembourg prepared a luxury exhibition which offers a view of his complex creation, evoking at the same time the creative atmosphere and artistic changes of the Belle Époque.
Alfons Mucha was born in the small village of Ivančice in 1860 and about 35 years later he won fame in Paris with his first poster, Gismonda, created for Sarah Bernhardt, the greatest actress of her time.
Paris has always been a city with a great creative spirit and a fine eye for the arts. Mucha´s style really won the city over. His creation is characteristic by the depicting of women of feminine curves, intermingled with floral motifs, ornamental lines and a fine palette of pastel shades. This style was gradually incorporated in decorative arts and Art Noveau came to the fore of all artistic styles.
Although most famous are Mucha´s posters, the artist was very versatile and created his works also through sculpture, painting or photograph. When in 1904 he made his first trip to the USA, he was called "the greatest decorative artist in the world".
The current Mucha´s exhibition in the Musée du Luxembourg originated from initiative of Mucha Foundation and its curator was Tomoko Sato, also curator of the Mucha Foundation. She has also published a book, ´Mucha´, which is available also in the Czech market.
