The tradition of the hotel dates back to the year of 1701, when the "Salle de l'Assemblée” was built, a Saxony Hall on the order of Mayor Deiml. It was called after its most famous guest, the Saxon Elector Augusta the Strong. Later he was replaced in office by Mayor Andreas Becher. He had commissioned the construction of Czech Hall, which stood in the place of the current Mirror Hall of the Grand Restaurant.
Over time, Johann Georg Pupp alias Jan Jiří Pop with his wife purchased parts of the architectural construction and established the hotel that we now known as hotel Pupp. The point of interest here is that Jan Jiří Pup was originally a confectioner, but nothing prevented him to fulfil his dream! During the years 1896-1913 Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer rebuilt the structures into one complex of luxury buildings. Today's historic form of the hotel comes from the date of its refurbishment in the years 1905-1907, carried out by the architectural design studio, Fellner and Helmer.
Over the time the hotel accommodated famous and notable personalities, such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Sebastian Bach or Sebastiano or Richard Wagner. Other residents here also included the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, Norwegian King Harald V., Franz Kafka, Karl Marx, Napoleon Bonaparte, Alfons Mucha, but also famous actors such as Michael Douglas, Denny DeVito, Renné Zellwegger, John Malkovich, John Travolta or Antonio Banderas.
What would you say to a lunch with Jaromír Jágr? You could meet him here, too! It is no secret that John Travolta stayed here too, in a truly royal style, having chosen the presidential suite. He was for example able to admire the beautiful stuccoed ceilings or the porcelain stove, that still used to heat this bedroom at the beginning of the twentieth century. A matter of course is the view of the luxurious city of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad).
There is really a lot of things worthy of estimation and admiration. We will pick only one for now. From the original Café Lounge was created a luxurious Banqueting Hall (1905 to 1907), which is nowadays recognised as one of the most beautiful European halls of its type. In 1926 this noble jewel acquired a great concert organ.
