This luxurious suburban villa is located in Prague, on the southern slope of Petřín Hill. It was designed between 1827 and 1831 by Heinrich Koch for the Kinsky family. He situated the summer residence in a picturesque corner of the garden with a view of Prague’s Old Town.

Kinsky Summer Residence

Luxurious appearance, pure classicism

The villa bears traces of late classicism and is a symmetrical, two-storey building with a typical terrace supported by four Doric columns. Everything is balanced, subordinated to the highest values of beauty and refinement. The imposing volume of the building makes it luxurious even without pompous embellishments. The clients took care to ensure that the architect designed a representative building worthy of their social standing.

Of the original interior furnishings, the gilded wooden chandeliers, wall sconces, doorframes, brass fittings and staircase have been preserved. Even some of the sculptures survived – the Kinsky family took the statue of Psyche by famous Italian sculptor Antonio Canova to Vienna.

Exceptional park of luxurious dimensions

The villa is surrounded by a park with a total area of 17 hectares, with a pond and waterfall. There was so much water in tunnels under the land that K. B. Kinsky sold it to the neighbouring monastery. A botanist took care of the flora throughout the extensive compound, dedicating thorough care to the planting and maintenance of vegetation.

Life of the villa

Life is change. Even the entire noble Kinsky family discovered this, finding themselves at a point where they had to sell many of their assets. The City of Prague bought the land from Ferdinand Bonaventura, opened the park to the general public, and since 1891 the villa houses an Ethnographic Museum.

Present day of the exemplary suburban villa

Since 1999, it is home to collections of the National Museum. Due to its poor technical condition, the building underwent a costly reconstruction in 2003, but it was well worth it. It would be a pity for such a valuable historical building to fall into disrepair. Its value was preserved and further generations can admire its luxury and refined aesthetics. Not only the classicist elements, but also the displays from the ethnic culture of the Czech Republic, all remind us of our history.

History deposited in history, self-contained and practical. Come and see for yourself.
