The French president Emmanuel Macron declared on Wednesday that he would discuss the possibility of using French nuclear deterrent to protect the continent from the Russian threats with his European allies, concerning the potential departure of the USA. France is the only nuclear power in the European Union.
In a TV speech before Thursday's special European summit, Macron identified Russia as a "threat to France and Europe" and said he decided to "initiate a strategic debate on the protection of our allies on the European mainland using our (nuclear) deterrent force". The use of French nuclear weapons should remain solely in the hands of the French president. Macron's move is a response to the winner of the German elections Friedrich Merz, who recently called for a discussion about "sharing nuclear weapons" with France, as reported by the AP agency.
