The new leadership of the Olomouc Region criticized the planned construction of the Danube-Odra-Elbe water canal. They reject the project in its complete form, not only its Elbe branch, which was met by a negative attitude from the previous leadership. According to the new councilors, the construction is functionally and economically meaningless. The construction of this river canal has been debated for several hundred years. The costs would climb up to hundreds of billions.
"The plan for the construction of the canal also envisages that the waterway would run across several municipalities. That is completely unacceptable. Among other things, the construction would take up thousands of hectares of land and have a negative impact on the groundwater cycle,"
said Jan Šafařík (Spojenci), Deputy Governor for Regional Development.
