US soldiers died during exercise in Lithuania

Three US Army soldiers, who were lost in Lithuania, were found dead in their armored vehicle, which was pulled from a swampy area early on Monday morning, the US Army command in Europe and Africa reported. Another soldier is still missing.

The bodies of the three soldiers were found after an extensive six-day effort by American, Polish, and Lithuanian armed forces and officials after the M88 Hercules vehicle was excavated from a peat bog on the extensive General Silvestras Žukauskas training ground in the city of Pabrade. The soldiers were on tactical exercises when their disappearance with the vehicle was reported early Tuesday morning, informed the AP agency.

The second largest city in Britain is swamped with garbage

The second largest British city declared a state of emergency after a sanitation workers' strike left over 17,000 tons of uncollected garbage on the sidewalk. "It is regrettable that we had to take this step, but we cannot tolerate a situation that causes damage and distress to communities throughout Birmingham," said John Cotton, the head of the Birmingham City Council according to CNN.

Photographs taken by Reuters in Birmingham this month show piles of uncollected waste overflowing from collection bins and trash cans. The dispute between the city and the garbage collectors has been ongoing since December 2024, when the trade union Unite the Union announced that in 2025 the garbage collectors would strike against the reduction in overtime payments, the ban on overtime and the abolition of the waste collection function by the council.
