Demi-Leigh Nel-Peteres

Since Sunday, 26 November, the most beautiful girl in the world is the exquisite Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters from RAS. She is the first person to bear the title Miss Universe born in the free and democratic Republic of South Africa: this is to say that she was born after the first democratic elections in 1994.

The greatest motivation for participation in the competition for Demi-Leigh, who recently gained a degree in the field of Business Management, was her half-sister who suffers from a physical handicap.

“It is thanks to her situation that I realise how unique life is. I always try to work twice as hard and enjoy my life twice as much for her too.”

In her free time, she helps to coach women in self-defence in a programme entitled the “Unbreakable Campaign”. She was motivated to do so by an attempted abduction which she faced in Johannesburg last year. She plans to develop the programme and in doing so, to help more women.

I would like to also help women to develop their business skills. At the age of 17, she was already the Junior Deputy Mayor of the city of George in Western Cape.

“I learned to assume responsibility for my future at a young age. I realised that the only person standing between me and my dreams is me. With hard work, concentration and determination, I can be anything I want. I have a competitive spirit and I always try to be the very best version of myself possible. My dreams never stop and I will never stop chasing them. I don’t believe in waiting for an opportunity, but rather in creating it.”

Second place was taken by a beauty from Columbia and third was taken by a Jamaican. Michaela Habáňová did not unfortunately make it into the final sixteen.
