Using calligraphic lines, areas of colour, geometric shapes, layering and sometimes even smudging of the work on purpose, the artist Bill Scott creates award-winning luxury works in an abstract style which are inspired by the art of Henri Matisse.

A combination of techniques for luxury composition

Over the course of the decades, Bill Scott has perfected use of various techniques, something which is evident in his work. You can see in his pictures contrasts between opaqueness and transparency which are created by overlapping of blocks of colour. Thin layers are applied over patterned surfaces, in some cases a specific layer of paint is scratched off, leading to creation of interesting compositions and collages.

The artist spends a lot of time in the printing studio where he collaborates with the master printer Cindi Royce Ettinger. The high-quality surface is the result of application of the thinnest possible layer of lacquer.

Victim of the perfect view from the window

We find a reflection of nature in the paintings of Bill Scott. It is like transfer of the perfect view from the window onto the artist’s canvas. The artist draws from nature and his own imagination.

The art historian Jason Rosenfeld describes his pictures as “a settlement of feelings”, which indicates that features of sincere and fundamental humanism are set into Scott’s luxury abstractions.

His latest pictures show a clear shift in the artist’s career which is often associated with the tradition of the local colours in Philadelphia.

Exhibitions, collections and awards won by Bill Scott

Bill Scott was born in 1956 and started his career with a course of study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1974 to 1979. However, the artists Jane Piper and Joan Mitchell with whom he worked informally also had an influence on his work.

Despite the fact that you have probably never heard his name before, Bill Scott is a highly renowned American artist. His works are regarded as highly prestigious and adorn hundreds of luxury interiors. Bill Scott has exhibited in museums a lot over the past three decades, these including Swarthmore College, Hollins University, the State Museum of Pennsylvania or The National Academy Museum.

You can see the main public collections of Scott’s works in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Delaware Art Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute Museum of Art, and the Woodmere Art Museum.

His luxury work has been published in Art in America, ARTnews, The New York Times and The Philadelphia Inquirer. In 2006, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by Pennsylvania Academy.
