Biennale 2018: The Czech project UNES-CO offers solutions to the overpressure of tourists
The 16th International Biennial of Architecture will soon take place in Venice. The Czech Slovak exhibition pavilion, headed by Kateřina Šedá, points out with its project the problem of "ordinary life" in tourist-crowded towns.
UNESCO cities need UNES-CO
It's nothing new under the sun, yet it's necessary to talk about it. Beautiful historical towns, of course not only in the Czech Republic, suffer under the heavy burden of tourists. And the local people suffer also. In the streets of such cities we see empty houses, unnecessary shops, streets people prefer to avoid – just like in socially excluded localities.
One such city in our country is Český Krumlov, an example from abroad is Venice. Both cities are among the magnificent treasures included on the UNESCO list, but the only ones who really desire them are the tourists. Tourism is growing into dangerous dimensions.
The company UNES-CO will pay you for living a "normal life"
In Český Krumlov, normal residents will return to several houses and flats and live their everyday lives there. UNES-CO offers not only free accommodation but also wages! For what? For living a normal life!
The headquarters of UNES-CO will be established at the Czech-Slovak pavilion. At the reception you will find a catalog with a range of normal activities, and inside the pavilion you can watch a live broadcast from Český Krumlov on how the so-called "warming" of the city is proceeding. The aim of this project is to bring a solution to the problem to tourist cities. So far, the town of Český Krumlov is the only one involved and financially supporting the project.
Who is Kateřina Šedá
Kateřina Šedá is a prominent Czech artist, winner of the Chalupecký award. In 2011 she exhibited at the prestigious London Tate Modern Gallery. Her UNES-CO project won in a competition organized by the National Gallery in Prague.

For this unique project, families and individuals looking for a normal life in the streets of a very touristy city are sought. If you have a desire to become a part of it, feel free to participate! They are still looking for individuals and families who are willing to live a normal life in Český Krumlov for one month. You will receive a service salary and wage. You can sign up using the online form by the 20th of April, 2018 at the UNES-CO project site.
The Venice Biennale will be held from May 26th to November 25th, 2018.
