From the list of galleries, our choice is an exhibition in the DOX centre for contemporary art, where caricatures by three leading Arabic caricaturists will be on display until 16 January 2017. Their works reflect everyday life and events in the turbulent region which includes North Africa and the Middle East. Via their caricatures, they reach out artistically to a wide public on the internet and in local periodicals, a public which otherwise exhibits little interest in the political scene. The exhibition is called Lines of Freedom and the exhibitors are: Abdul Raheem Yassira from Iraq, Nadia Khiarii from Tunisia and Khalid Albaiha from the Sudan.
When you go to look at the Christmas tree on the Old Town Square, take some time to visit the Old Town Hall, traditionally now home to the prestigious Czech Press Photo competition until January next year. The competition is now in its 22nd year and you can see here works by photographers bearing witness to life in the past year. The exhibition thus serves as an interesting and unique look back over the past 364 days. A total of 460 photographs are on display and you will be able to see the winning photos as well as the work of nominated photographers.
Photographs from a slightly different world are also on offer at Prague City Gallery. You are cordially invited to the House of Photography where you can view unique photos of film stars of the 20th century. Sam Shaw is one of the most famous photographers of the past century, having travelled around the USA capturing the everyday life of Americans with his camera. However, his path through life also took him to film, where he became famous for taking luxury photographs of famous stars, some of which became legendary. For example, the famous “flying skirt” photo of Marylin Monroe.
