Alšovo nábřeží

The Alš Riverbank is one side bordered by the romantic Vltava River, on the other by luxurious buildings. It leads from the site of Rudolfinum and continues in the direction of Charles Bridge along the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design and Higher Medical and Technical School. In this spot the riverbank turns into a pedestrian zone and ends at the Four Seasons Hotel from where it continues through the Platnéř Street.

Beautiful and quiet place near the river

At Rudolfinum you can relax in the pleasant park, dominated by the statue of Josef Mánes, the most important representative of Czech romanticism. If you cross to the opposite side, to the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design, you will discover a luxurious little park with the memorial of Jan Palach, represented by the sculptural group House of the Son and House of the Mother.

You will find here benches in beautifully kept greenery, offering a very pleasant seating near the Vltava River. Behind you is the luxurious Four Seasons hotel with the renowned Prague restaurants, Cotto Crudo.

Daydream a little and imagine the past: no luxury here!

A few centuries ago these luxurious buildings have not yet been constructed and the now picturesque waterfront was desolate. There was a ford crossing here and a wooden bridge later, becoming a link with the other side of the Vltava River. The wooden bridge was eventually replaced by a chain walkway. Today, when looking at the massive Mánes Bridge, this seems almost unbelievable.

By the end of the 19th century, Alš Riverbank bore the name of Lower Riverbank and there was also the ´Lower´ ferry. Contrariwise, on the Kampa side there was the ´Upper´ Riverbank. A much nicer name originated but a few years later, when the riverbank was renamed to the embankment of Crown Prince Rudolph. It has been recognised under its current name since 1919. Take a little time off to visit it during your wandering through Prague.

Everybody probably knows about this lively neighborhood in Prague 5. But it’s not only the Nový Smíchov shopping mall and a few luxurious boutiques that attract the Prague locals as well as tourists.

Streets of Smíchov

Smíchov is a relatively large district in Prague (approx. 7 km²) with 36,000 inhabitants. It is located between Malá Strana, Hlubočepy and Radlice, spreading east along the Plzeňská street towards the border with Motol.

In one part you will find beautiful villas that represent perfect housing in luxury, with breathtaking views of Prague – these include the villa neighborhoods of Hřebenky, Malvazinky and Dívčí hrady.

The beautiful parks of Smíchov

This district is not particularly rich in greenery but it includes the Kinsky Garden, which leads up to the Prague Castle and is followed up by Petřínské sady. When you head from the Nový Smíchov mall towards Malvazinky, you will encounter the beautiful Na Skalce park. It is located on a hill and includes the first water tower in historical Smíchov. In the park you can enjoy a charming lake, gazebo and different types of trees.

The two islands that belong to Smíchov – Císařská louka and Dětský ostrov – are also an oasis of peace and quiet.

Area around the Smíchov railroad station

The part of Smíchov in the bottom part of the Smíchov railroad station isn’t currently particularly exclusive, but this should change in time. A new developer project should start by the end of 2018 and should bring more greenery and luxurious housing to this neighborhood.

Culture and social life

New restaurants and cafés are being opened all over Prague and Smíchov is no exception. Cultural events are provided by Švandovo theather or the CineStar Anděl cinema. For shopping you can visit the Nový Smíchov shopping mall and in summer you can enjoy various events in the premises of the famous Smíchov brewery.
