The star guest of this year’s luxury film festival, which will be kicking off on Friday, 30 June and ending on 8 July, will be the actress Uma Thurman. Apart from acting, she also produces films. She will be accepting the KV IFF Festival President’s Award from the festival president Jiří Bartoška during the opening ceremony. The same award will be accepted in person by the actor and musician Jeremy Renner, who will be presenting his new film Wind River.

“I am glad that the ranks of the guests receiving awards at this year’s festival in Karlovy Vary will be bolstered by Jeremy and Uma, both actors with a varied filmography including films highly acclaimed by both the public and the critics,” said the president of the KV IFF Jiří Bartoška.

Which films could interest visitors?

The inaugural film for this year’s KV IFF will be the luxurious romantic comedy The Big Sick directed by Michael Showalter. The sci-fi film directed by Denis Villeneuve Arrival will be shown at the festival closing ceremony.

Younger audiences will appreciate the film directed by Helene Hegemann Axolotl Overkill, which was shown this year at the Sundance Festival, where it won an award for best cinematography. For fans of racier scenes, there will be the luxurious erotic thriller L’Amant Double. There will also be an exclusive pre-premiere of the new film by Sofia Coppola The Beguiled.

Accommodation: ranging from luxury to camping

You will pay at least around CZK 1,500 for luxury accommodation in the hotels and guesthouses in Karlovy Vary during the festival. A lot of people who live there also offer rental of their flats during the festival at prices of around CZK 500 per person.

A tent village will, as is now the tradition, be open in the Rolava open-air pool complex, this being the cheapest alternative (CZK 95/night with your own tent), although you won’t enjoy much luxury there. Nevertheless, the grassy area of the swimming pool complex was used last year by 2,000 visitors, mainly from the ranks of young students. They can also use the two hostels in the town, or schools which open up their gyms and outside areas. Simply put, even Karlovy Vary has its limits and the town has to somehow deal with the annual one-off flood of visitors.
