Do you remember the American film trilogy Back to the Future? Specifically the second part, when the main character Marty McFly sets out on a journey through time and finds himself in 2015? With his mouth open, he walks down the street and observes not only various unfamiliar electronic gadgets but also buildings, food and fashion. And now imagine that you, too, would have a similar opportunity and could take a peek into the future of our planet. What kind of buildings and structures would appear in front of your eyes? The International Skyscraper Competition 2020, which gives young, promising visionaries a chance to shine, attempts to answer this very question. This year, more than four hundred authors entered this competition, trying to impress the jury with their designs. If you're interested in what kind of skyscrapers could theoretically "grow" on Earth in the future, come and have a look at some of them together with LP-life.cz.
When you hear the word "skyscraper," the first thing you think of is probably New York City and its skyhigh buildings with glass windows and concrete or steel structures. But it would be a mistake to expect similar designs in the skyscraper competition organized by the online magazine eVolo. The authors of the submitted entries really unleashed their imagination and the seven-member jury didn't have an easy job at all. In the end, however, the jurors selected three winning visionary projects, which look like something out of a sci-fi film at first glance. On the other hand, it's likely that we'll see more of them in the future.

A skyscraper to fight the coronavirus
Not surprisingly, the skyscraper that was designed in response to the current coronavirus pandemic took first place in the competition. The authors of the "medical" skyscraper called Epidemic Babel took into consideration particularly the busy hospitals, which landed in a state of crisis in many parts of the world. The gentlemen D Lee, Gavin Shen, Weiyuan Xu and Xinhao Yuan from China designed the building model so that it could be erected within five days if necessary. The building consists of a steel beam, into which the individual medical departments could be quickly placed. It is possible that this design will be implemented in the years to come, because compared to the hospitals that have being built in China so far, the construction of Epidemic Babel would be much cheaper.

More greenery, less concrete
Another potential skyscraper of the future, which ranked second, is Egalitarian Nature. As the name suggests, this building should be connected mainly with nature. The large skyscraper by designers Yutian Tang and Yuntao Xu from the United States hides a vertical park for various recreational activities inside. And in order for the visitors of this building to achieve an even tighter connection with nature, they will have to deserve the beautiful view from the upper floors by walking up on their own two feet. You won't find an elevator inside. Fair's fair!

Cells as a refuge for fishermen
Last but not least, we'd like to introduce you a project that could provide housing for fishermen in the city of Saint-Louis in Senegal. Locals often have to deal with rising sea levels, so they are frequently forced to move more inland, far from the coast. Because the city is mostly known as the center of the fish trade, Taiwanese designers came up with the idea of building arched residential units here, whose structure would protect the locals from rising water.
