Fashion designer Paul Surridge presented his debut at Milan Fashion Week. He formerly worked for luxury brands Calvin Klein, Jil Sander, Burberry and Z Zegna, but was appointed as creative director by Roberto Cavalli this may, after Peter Dundas resigned from the position in October 2016. The S/S 2018 collection is inspired by the life of a modern woman – attractive, powerful, strong and sensual. What’s more, she is always on the move and changes like a chameleon!
Paul Surridge is a minimalist in maximalist clothing. He demonstrates this in the S/S 2018 collection, which consists mainly of long, monochromatic embroidered dresses. These are embellished with cut-out, leather, luxurious crystals or sheer parts made of chiffon. There are also a few mini dresses which honour the beauty of the female body.
In addition to the classic black, white, nude, blue and red, the collection also features garments with animal prints, which are typical for the Roberto Cavalli luxury brand. Zebra print appears on dresses, coats and suits, while luxurious crocodile leather was used on trousers in shades of caramel and maple syrup. An interesting and unusual accessory, incorporated by Paul Surridge into the collection, is Moroccan footwear. According to Paul Surridge, you can even wear it with an evening gown!
Paul Surridge’s new role will comprise taking over responsibility for all of the group’s brands and creative positions. Paul himself says: “It is a unique opportunity to contribute a new chapter to the Roberto Cavalli universe, which celebrates beauty, sensuality and the power of women.”
The Roberto Cavalli brand has finally pleased me after all these years! The era of everything being covered in loud patterns and mad day-glow colours is evidently a thing of the past. A new, calmer era has begun and I like that. Only one thing sprung to mind looking at the S/S 2018 collection: a combination of luxury and ostentation. The fact that a person is dressed from head to toe in luxury fashion does not mean also having the brand name on the soles of your shoes and I appreciate that here.
I am pleasantly surprised by the combination of evening gowns with Moroccan shoes with a low heel. This will in particular be appreciated by tall women who measure roughly 181 cm like me. The end of having to stoop over people around you while mingling! And which item would I wear first in the spring? Definitely those light stripy trousers paired with the top with distinctively scalloped shoulders. That gets a big THUMBS UP!
