When I heard about the Butterfly House in Prague, I knew I would have to visit it sooner or later! The simulated environment of the Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia, which I had the opportunity to visit and admire with my own eyes a year ago, the tropical jungle climate and hundreds of butterflies flying around won me over in the first second.
There are about 600 butterflies in the luxurious paradise of Papilonia and you can admire 30 different species from the rainforests of Mexico, South America, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Australia.
Personally, I was most captivated by the magnificent Morpho peleides, referred to as the "flying gem". This showpiece of vibrant blue color with a wingspan of up to 20cm comes from the Amazon and you'll find it in abundance in the Butterfly House.
As I walked through the "rainforest", I couldn't help but wonder how difficult it must be to simulate the tropical climate. And so I didn't hesitate to approach the Managing Director of Papilonia, Mr. Michael Kučera, who gave me the following answer:
In Papilonia I had the opportunity to watch butterflies feast on sweet fruit and other delicacies, admire a butterfly hatchery at the back of the spacious room, and I learned a lot of interesting facts as a bonus.
Butterflies perceive taste with their "feet", not with their tongues like humans.
The life of a butterfly is about 2-4 weeks long.
Some butterflies can imitate a dead leaf, others have a precise replica of an owl's eye on their wings for the purpose of intimidating predators.
If you want to know more, try and find out by yourselves. The Butterfly House will let you experience a luxurious adventure, as well as offer a unique opportunity to learn everyting you didn't know about these elegant flying creatures!
