The prestigious address itself indicates that Monaco is truly a luxurious paradise, not only for the local harbour with its ships and yachts, but also for its unique historical charm. The Principality consists of the old town with Prince's Palace and the city part of Monte Carlo with the casino. These districts are attached to the urban part la Condamine with the port and shopping zones, the adjacent district Moneghetti with exotic gardens and the industrial and working district Fontvieille in the West. The gangways of the old town are well preserved and restored and speak to their long history.
The building of the Belle Époque is reminiscent of the famous Paris Opera. That is because it had indeed been designed by the same architect, Charles Garnier. Inside there is a quantity of luxury gaming salons - Renaissance Salon, European Salon, White Salon, American Games Salon, and Salon of the Graces.
We also need to mention the phenomenal Grand Prix races held in Monaco or athletic Golden League belonging to the most prestigious events of their kind. This year Grand Prix Monaco is held from 25. to 27. May.
According to legend, the landscape was named according to the temple which had been built here by the ancient Greeks called “Heraiklos Monoikos". The first inhabitants who settled here around the year 1000 B.C. were Ligures; the local sea is called after them. The tribes of Ligures were replaced about a century later by the Phoenicians, who named the place Portus Hercules Monoicos. Later the inhabitants also included the Greeks, Cartagians and Romans. At the beginning of the 13th century Genoan Fulco de Castelo had built a castle here that was conquered as far back as 1295 by the house of Grimaldi who hold it to this day. After the late Prince Rainier it is governed by his son Albert.
