There is a lot of "BESTs" attached to Julia Roberts. She regularly places high in the rankings of the highest-paid actresses and the most beautiful women. They call her "the actress with the most beautiful smile in Hollywood", and rightfully so. She won an Oscar and three Golden Globes, and although she starred in many movies, she was brought to prominence by the roles of fateful women in romantic comedies.
Julia Fiona Roberts was born on October 28, 1967 in Smyrna, Georgia, as the third child in a show-business family. Both of her parents were artistic people, who make a living as drama teachers and screenwriters. And, like Julia, her brothers embarked on an acting career.
During her school years, however, Julia often considered herself an "ugly duckling". She wore thick glasses and braces and dreamed of becoming a vet. But that changed when she decided to follow in her family's footsteps and moved to New York. There, she signed a contract with the modeling agency Click and enrolled in acting classes.
Julia gained her first role in the film Blood Red (1987), where she played with her older brother. But she only got to say a few short sentences. She first appeared on the big screen in Satisfaction (1988), alongside Liam Neeson and Justine Bateman.
A year later, she portrayed a bride with diabetes in the film Steel Magnolia (1989), for which she received a Golden Globe and her first Oscar nomination.
The turning point in her career came in 1990 with the cult film Pretty Woman, which immediately catapulted her among acting superstars. In retrospect, this may seem surprising, but Roberts was definitely not the director's first choice. Not even the second or third one! Julia only got the role after Michelle Pfeiffer, Molly Ringwald, Meg Ryan, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Karen Allen and Daryl Hannah turned it down.
Julia's portrayal of the flippant prostitute Vivian earned her another Oscar nomination as well as her second Golden Globe. Since then, Pretty Woman has been holding the first place on the list of romantic comedies with the most sold tickets in the United States. The film earned almost ten billion crowns worldwide.
Since then, Roberts has starred in countless films, such as the thriller Nights with the Enemy (1991) or Spielberg's Hook (1991). She also played in the thriller The Pelican Brief (1993) with Denzel Washington, and got a role in the historical drama Michael Collins (1996).
However, we all know and love her mainly because she starred in many excellent romantic comedies. Those include My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), which was a world hit and is considered one of the best romantic comedies of all time. Two years later, she appeared in the cult film Notting Hill (1999) alongside Hugh Grant.
In 2000, she received her first and only Oscar for Erin Brockovich. In the movie, she portrayed an environmental activist. This film also made Roberts one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. She became the first actress to receive approximately 450 million crowns for a movie. On top of that, the Hollywood Reporter put her on the first place in their list of the most influential women.
However, Roberts' career is much more extensive. She has starred in Ocean's Eleven (2001), Mona Lisa Smile (2003), Closer (2004) and Charlie Wilson's War (2007).
From more recent films, we could see her in the comedy Eat Pray Love (2010), the drama August: Osage County (2013) or the romantic comedy My Beautiful Teacher (2011), where she played alongside Tom Hanks.
And her career definitely doesn't seem to be slowing down. Recently, she appeared in the drama Ben Is Back (2018) or the Amazon series Homecoming (2018).
During the 1990s and at the turn of the millennium, she was one of the highest paid actresses. Her net assets are estimated at more than five billion crowns. Five times, People magazine named her the most beautiful woman in the world, most recently only three years ago. And we're not surprised at all!
In most of Julia's films, her character was granted a romantic happy ending. But how about real life? Rumour has it that she kept falling in love with one of her film partners after another. The actress established a romantic relationship with Jason Patrick, Liam Neeson and Matthew Perry. She was briefly engaged to actor Kiefer Sutherland, but three days before the wedding, the couple broke up.
In 1993, Julia married country singer Lyle Lovett. However, the marriage didn't last and the couple broke up two years later. Between 1998 and 2001, Roberts was together with American actor Benjamin Bratt.
She met her current husband, cinematographer Daniel Moder, while filming The Mexican in 2000, at which point she was still dating Bratt. In 2002, they got married and are raising three children together.
