The young couple were looking forward to their first child - a miracle baby. Both were nervous about the impending delivery. When the coronavirus crisis hit and the government began introducing various regulations and measures, the future parents' stomachs knotted in fear. Fathers were not allowed to provide support for new moms in maternity hospitals. Fear and anxiety replaced excitement. Yet a healthy baby was born. And the day after that, dads were allowed to be present at deliveries again…
The coronavirus crisis, quarantine and the state of emergency affected all citizens without exception. But the feelings experienced by the couple, who have since became the parents of little Matyášek, are something the two will remember for the rest of their lives.
"I really wanted to be there when my first son was born. Not only because of the experience itself, but mainly because of my girlfriend, too, I wanted to support her, "
says Pavel Srnka with a hint of sadness, adding that he naturally understands and respects all measures introduced to prevent the virus from spreading, but that he was heavily affected by the ministers' decision-making. So many people and institutions had fought for the fathers‘ right to be in the delivery room without an success, and suddenly, as if by magic, it was possible again...
In view of the favorable development of the epidemic, when the uncontrolled spread of the disease has been stopped, the Ministry of Health, in consultation with epidemiologists, reconsidered the existing emergency measure concerning the ban on visits to medical facilities. Under precisely specified and defined conditions, the presence of the other parent or other members of the household at delivery is possible again. The measure entered into force on 16 April 2020.
"We agreed with the epidemiologists that it is possible in the current situation and under certain conditions. The father has to wear a face mask, have a temperature below 37 °C, and the delivery will take place in a separate room. I'm very happy for all the parents, I know it hasn‘t been easy,"
Matyáš was born on April 15. His father wasn't there, but since everything went smoothly, both parents are trying to get over it.
"We have a healthy son. My partner came through just fine, and she says the medical staff was great and helped her a lot. I am happy for the way things are and for what I have. I only hope that when our second child is born, I'll be able to be there,"
