Queen Elizabeth II. said that 2020 has brought us closer

Queen Elizabeth II. gave her annual Christmas Eve speech in the UK. The 94-year-old queen spoke of the importance of light to people of all faiths, adding that words such as "hope" and "unity" prevail, although communities couldn't gather and celebrate as usual this year.

Furthermore, the queen voiced her thoughts about the coronavirus pandemic, saying it had led to many challenges, but also to a sense of unity within the UK as well as around the world. She touched the subject of the holiday season being "tinged with sadness", as some people are mourning the loss of those dear to them and others missing friends and family members distanced for safety.

A powerful explosion that shook downtown Nashville in the early morning hours injured three people and disrupted communications systems across the state. A parked van exploded in the American city right in front of a building that belonged to telecommunications giant AT&T. Buildings in the area suffered structural damage, windows were smashed and trees were felled. Videos posted on social media also showed water running out of the damaged pipeline.

"It looks like a bomb went off,"

said Nashville Mayor John Cooper, urging people to stay away from the area.

Officers responding to reports of gunshots just before 06:00 found a camper van, which exploded several minutes later. A police officer was knocked off their feet by the force of the blast. The police believe that the explosion in front of the telecommunications building was caused intentionally. However, no motive has yet been established, nor do the police know who was behind the incident. On Friday night, Nashville Subway Police Chief John Drake stated that investigators found tissue near the site of the blast. According to them, it will be examined to see whether it is human remains. However, he could not say how close the tissue was to where the motor home exploded.

Factories in Yiwu, known as China's "Christmas Village," have been producing tinsel, decorations, and other festive ornaments that are now hanging on Christmas trees around the world for months. However, production almost stopped in mid-December as local authorities struggled to meet goals of energy-efficiency. Power restrictions in Yiwu first gained attention last week when photos and videos from the dark streets began circulating on Chinese social media.

"We have a lot of orders, but we don't have enough time to complete them,"

said Ma Hairu, who works for a manufacturer of paper decorations for Christmas and New Year.

Officials in China's Zhejiang Province are trying to meet the central government's five-year energy consumption target of December 31. Efforts to reduce energy consumption have disrupted millions of lives. In Yiwu, heating in offices, shopping malls, schools and hospitals has been turned off. Daily temperatures have dropped as low as 10 degrees Celsius.
