Santa Claus Village is on the polar circle!

At the turn of the millennium, the most popular Christmas destination in all of Scandinavia was founded right on the polar circle: Santa Clause Village. It is an extraordinary place that garners a lot of interest in the Christmas season! But Santa doesn’t live here only at Christmas. He lives here all year round and devotes himself to his mission: improving the happiness of children and kindness of adults.

How to reach Santa? The elves will help!

You can spend all of Christmas at the luxurious village. The official home of Santa Clause is 8 km from Rovaniemi and 2 km from the airport. From Prague, you can get there in about half a day with a stopover in Helsinki. Upon arrival you will be guided by elves, who will show you the way to Santa’s office. You can take a photo and exchange a few words with him. Naturally, children are the most excited about this. But be prepared to pay for everything!

Santa’s post office is worth noting

The village is home to Santa’s post office with a range of luxury services, hotels, plenty of attractions, shops and restaurants. At Santa’s post office, you can buy Christmas cards and send them to anybody with a special stamp. This is also the destination of several hundred thousand letters every year. Santa is assisted by elves and they allegedly reply to letters with a return address! You can also leave your friends’ address and they will receive a small gift at Christmas.

The luxurious Christmas village also features the nearby Santa Park: an amusement centre among the cliffs. There are various attractions, cookie decorating and a dance show. Another place to visit is the Husky Park, where you can ride a dogsled.

The fairy tale clearly says: He who wants more, gets nothing!

A fisherman is fishing by the sea and catches a magic goldfish which promises to grant him 3 wishes. The fisherman foolishly leaves the choice of all three wishes to his wife. She first wants a new house instead of the old shack she lives in, then a luxury palace and in the end, wants to be the ruler of the sea! Her last wish angers the sea and the astonished fisherman finds his wife back where she started: in a dilapidated old shack. He never catches the goldfish again and his wife has what she deserves – nothing!

Different versions on the same theme

Since that time, the goldfish has been used as the theme for many fairy tales. In the Czech Republic, we for example all know its luxury animated version: The Tale of the Goldfish, dating back to 1951, animated by Jan Trnka and retold by Jan Werich. Three wishes do of course also figure in this story.

Where to find a goldfish?

You may not have to travel to the ends of the world to find this magical golden aquatic creature. The goldfish can be found in the Czech Republic, having been bred from the silver variety and brought to Europe in the 17th century. Although there are no records to show that it will grant you 3 wishes, Christmastime is a time of “magical” festivities, so who knows, maybe nobody has even tried it yet! If you do want to try this year, be careful what you wish for so you don’t end up like the greedy fisherman’s wife!
