Gerhard Richter: The Sea, 1970

The exhibition offers more than 70 works by the acclaimed artist and represents his very first retrospective exhibition in Central and Eastern Europe. Gerhard Richter himself participated in selection of works for the exhibition.

Gerhard Richter: Pictures worth millions

Gerhard Richter is one of the most expensive artists of modern times, whose luxury pictures can even reach a value of several million crowns. This March, for example, his picture “Iceberg” was auctioned for 550 million crowns. His most expensive work was sold at auction in London in 2015. This was the “Abstract Painting” from 1986 and it was auctioned for almost one billion crowns.

A cross-section of luxurious artistic work

The unique exhibition in the Kinský Palace offers a look at all of the artist’s styles and the themes which he has engaged in over the course of his life.

Gerhard Richter is famous for creation of luxury realistic photo paintings which often come across as blurred photographs. He used this style for example to paint the picture “Uncle Rudi”, which the artist donated to the gallery in Lidice half a century ago and which depicts his uncle, a Nazi soldier.

One luxury section is devoted to landscapes, the perfection of which verges on the hypnotic. He created these using photographs which he took during his travels.

Gerhard Richter also engaged in abstract works. A lot of these are characterised by their great colourfulness. Layering is evident in them. Paints are applied and spread with a spatula in various directions, smearing some of the layers and emphasising others.

The legendary Atlas

The unique work entitled Atlas has been in the process of creation since the 60s, a collection of original photographs, newspaper cuttings and drawings, mapping members of the violent Red Army Faction, also known as the Baader-Meinhof Gang, who were arrested, tried and hanged in their cells. There are also historical family pictures or photographs showing the horrors of the Holocaust.

The exhibition is part of the Czech-German Cultural Spring 2017 and you have the opportunity to view these luxurious works until 3 September.
