We took a look at the outfits of the Duchess from Cambridge Kate Middleton and the Duchess from Sussex Meghan Markle. Which one claimed victory over the other at wearing a luxury gown at the altar? Which one knows how to be in style in her free time and in formal meetings with the Queen? The Fashion duel begins!
7 years ago at the wedding with Prince William, Kate wore a magnificent dress designed by Sarah Burton, the creative director of the brand Alexander McQueen. The satin gown with a lacy bodice was divine, and we like the way it pronounced the Duchess’s curves.
Meghan chose a minimalistic gown with 7/8 sleeves and a long train from the British fashion designer Clare Waight Keller, the creative director of Givenchy, for her wedding with Prince Harry. Although the gown itself was beautiful, something a bit more extravagant and imaginative would have been more at place, such an innocent look didn’t seem to suit her.
The dresses that Kate wears to meetings with the Queen and to other significant social events are indeed elegant and imaginative. The Duchess opts for red and green colours, chequered patterns but also the colours white or blue. The luxurious pieces always correspond to royal rules.
Meghan is a greenhorn in this regard, so we can forgive her a few faux pas. For her private audience with the Queen, she chose an elegant, cream-coloured dress by Givenchy, which she complemented with a black belt. In other cases, Meghan relies on natural hues and she conforms her outfits to one colour, maximum two. She needs a bit of courage!
Kate wins our sympathy, because aside from wearing luxury brands, she also wears ready-to-wear clothing, which is also financially accessible to mere mortals. In her free time, she chooses dresses, heels and jeans even sneakers. We particularly like Kate’s wavy dress by Jenny Packham. The yellow one is a stunning fit, it’s rejuvenating and we could hardly imagine she’s had three children already.
It’s evident that Meghan also tries to bring herself closer to other women with her style. She often wears black pants, ankle footwear and simple jackets or beach strappy dresses in combination with sandals. However, we don’t consider all her outfits a success, that is why in this round, Meghan has lost as well.
Fantastic, colourful garments, dresses, overcoats and hats that Kate wears have flair and she seldom steps amiss. Meghan on the other hand, revels in natural hues and simplicity. It is evident from the way she dresses that she has been in the Royal Family a much shorter time and that she’s still learning to adapt to the fashion rules and style that being in the family entails. It will be an interesting duel next year, when everything can change...
