Taiwan decided to redesign its passports to highlight its own name. The official name of the country, "Taiwan, the Republic of China", will now be significantly smaller, encircling the coat of arms. The word "Taiwan", on the other hand, will dominate the title page with its larger and bold font. The island of Taiwan is an independent state for practical purposes, but China considers it a breakaway province. Authorities stated that the redesign was intended to stop confusion between its nationals and Chinese citizens.
