Making a Dreamlike Vision a Reality – the Starlight Headliner
The designers at Rolls Royce have come up with one more must-have luxury accessory – the Starlight Headliner. They promise to make every trip a magical one with the ability to turn on your own starlit sky. And, we say “your own” because each skyscape is unique and bespoke to each owner. The affect is achieved by embedding up to three thousand fiber optic cables into the headliner of the car at varying angles and at varying depths. The result is from 800 – 1,600 holes in the leather headliner.
Each starlight headliner customer can specify the grouping of constellations they would like in their car. One customer actually wanted the headliner to be configured in the shape of their coat of arms. Because the lights are set behind microscopic holes in the leather headliner of the car, they are totally hidden until illuminated. By being set at different angles and varying depths, the light escapes in multiple directions and at different intensities. The brightness of each ‘star’ can be adjusted to suit your mood – from bright enough to read under to a very relaxing background of stars twinkling as they do in a starlit sky.
Stellar Genesis
This feature was first made available in 2007 in the Rolls Phantom with just 800 lights. It has now been extended to cover the entire roof of the car with 1,340 lights. All of the work on the installation of this optional feature is done by hand and it takes the skilled Rolls craft persons from 9 to 17 hours to complete. The finished result is but one more example of the blending of traditional craftsmanship with the latest in technological advances.
When you look up at night, would you like to see the Little Dipper and the Big Dipper or something more personal? The people at Rolls Royce are ready to provide almost anything in the sky above your head. So far, Rolls may be the only car company offering this special feature as an option; but, who knows what will be there from Rolls next year or even 10 years from now. Life just keeps getting better with more and more choices.
What I do know for sure is that this is one more feature that could fall within the definition of an ultimate luxury and something most of us will only be able to dream about.
