Balaclava sweater

The brand on the black list It has only been a few months since the Prada brand was accused of racism due to its collection of deluxe Pradamaila key-rings in the shape of monkeys with thick lips and since Dolce & Gabbana was accused of racisms for its advert for the fashion show in Shanghai, in which a model eats pizza with chopsticks. And now the Gucci brand has been accused of racism. What has it done?

What’s behind this accusation?!

The black Balaclava turtle-neck from the Fall Winter 2018 collection, with a red-lined opening for the mouth, is the cause of all these problems. This item has caused a wave of outrage from the general public because it is allegedly reminiscent of blackface, a caricature making fun of black people.

Poor timing

February is the month of Afro-American history during which important figures and events are celebrated. This is also probably why people were more sensitive to the incident and why an even bigger wave of criticism was directed at the brand.

The end of free creativity?

The company apologised to the public and immediately withdrew the sweater from its brick and mortar shops and also from its on-line shops.

Three deluxe world brands in the past three months. The number of fashion houses accused of racism is becoming alarming. Should we be concerned about the end of free creativity? Let’s hope not!
