Balenciaga did not invite the guests of the Paris Fashion Week into any palace, theatre, or another notable cultural sightseeing point. It chose something a bit more controversial - a tunnel. What was the message it wished to communicate?

Through Technology, Balenciaga SS19 Creations Will Transfer you to Another Reality

The fashion week is dominated by digitisation

The new collection for SS19 was revealed by Spanish Balenciaga within the premises of the film studio Cité du Cinéma. The luxury fashion show took place in a narrow tunnel with rounded ceiling, covered by digital screens which decorated luxury installations created by artist John Rafman. And when we think about it, in the end the digital world did attract us a bit more than the outfits themselves, and that is probably wrong, don´t you think?

Society and technology

Behind the SS19 collection stands Georgian fashion designer, Demna Gvasalia, who has been for three years in the position of Balenciaga´s creative director. Are you interested in what does he come up with this time round and why the brand resonates with the theme of digitisation?

"We wanted to create the idea that we are inside a digital mind. Through technology we can transport people into another reality." Demna Gvasalia

Balenciaga revived velvet

Balenciaga collections reintroduced luxury velvet. While in the collection of SS18 the brand reserved this material only for men, in the SS19 collection it was given a go ahead! Velvet is the material of coats with shoulder pads as well as sensuous mini dresses.

Trends set by Balenciaga

In addition to these pieces the brand presented luxury satin maxi dresses, leather overcoats, dresses with shoulder straps with distinctive prints and patterns, denim and leather skirts, shiny blouses, coloured stockings or high heels and shoes of neon colours.

The most luxurious models were presented at the conclusion of the fashion show

The best of the entire collection were models that emerged at the end of the fashion show. Untraditionally-cut mini dresses of emerald shade, an asymmetric midi dress of gentle blue or a red gown with a train? Perfection that is beyond reproach.

What did this fashion show give me? Depression...

There is no difference is case of the SS19 collection. But it is a far shot from the revolutionary Triple S trainers. It simply looks as if all the creativity has quite simply evaporated and the only thing left is a boring (sometimes crazy) all-sorts mix.

Velvet coats as a new trend of the upcoming season? For goodness sake, no! Not only that anyone wrapped in anything of velvet straight away optically puts on a stone, but these shoulder pads will turn you into a troll from the 80´s. Unfortunately, the same is true of the leather version. It is simply a disaster worthy only of Salvation Army´s container.

And finally, we have kind of suits consisting of a loose shirt with a collar and classic pants, all in the same colour or pattern. I call these "NOBODY” outfits. They remind me of those psycho horror movie costumes, where people ruled by lunatics must not show that they have their own opinion or even just move freely. While I can understand that the social code forced the present guests to applaud, I am depressed...

The greatest FLOPS of this collection according to Ornella are to be found at the beginning of the photo gallery below the article.
