When the British prince Harry and his wife Meghan made the public statement that they do not want to fulfill royal duties anymore and wish to live as a "normal" family instead, dividing their life between Great Britain and Canada, the entire world paused. What that actually means and what it will entail remains rather unclear for now. What is clear though is that the former actress wants to spend a part of the year living in Canada. But Canadian citizens do not want to pay for the royal couple's expenses, not in the slightest.
All expenses such as the royal family's protection are paid for with taxpayers' money; British people are used to it, but Canadians do not want to and will not tolerate this "vice".
Yes or no?
According to a recent survey, most Canadians wanted prince Harry as the Governor General, aka the representative of the British Queen. On the other hand, according to a different survey, most Canadians also do not want to pay for the royal couple's expenses. And one of the most popular Canadian daily newspapers, The Globe and Mail, even wrote in their editorial that if Harry and Meghan were to remain members of the royal family, they wouldn't be welcome in Canada.

A regular couple is welcome
While Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter that Harry, Meghan and their son Archie are "among friends, and always welcome here", The Globe And Mail does not share that opinion. The conservative newspaper that has always supported the monarchy before wrote in their article:
"If they were ordinary private citizens, plain old Harry and Meghan from Sussex, they would be welcome."
According to the newspaper, the life of the royal family is something Canada cannot afford. Allegedly it even breaks an unspoken constitutional taboo. They also write that Canadian royals do not live there, but govern remotely, and it should stay that way. Naturally, state visits are welcome. Sometimes it is nice to see one's royals, and a short visit is not as financially tasking as repeat stays spanning several months.

Harry and Meghan's status should be explained soon. Queen Elizabeth II said in her press statement that she respects the couple's wishes, but their new roles have yet to be clarified.
But it's about time, because the citizens of North America are getting impatient...
