SALON opens with an exhibit of the work of Tsuyoshi Maekawa

The new SALON area of the prestigious Saatchi Gallery, which opened at the end of February, debuted with an ambitious project. Until 14 May, it will host an exhibit of the historic works of Japanese artist Tsuyoshi Maekawa from the fifties and sixties; the exhibit was made possible thanks to collaboration with the Lévy Gorvy gallery.

The Gutai Art Association

Maekawa was a prominent member of the Gutai Art Association, which was the most prominent Japanese avant-garde association and was founded after the war, specifically in 1954. This Japanese group of eighteen artists remained active until 1972. The group was founded by Jira Yoshihara, who is viewed as the founder of modern abstract Japanese painting. Gutai can be loosely translated as “concrete”, and the name signified the stance of the artists that art represents human spiritual freedom.
